Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments https://afiremanswife.com/2018/12/17/cinnamon-salt-dough-ornaments/ https://afiremanswife.com/2018/12/17/cinnamon-salt-dough-ornaments/#respond Mon, 17 Dec 2018 20:28:12 +0000 http://afiremanswife.com/?p=3094 So did anyone else get the Chick-fil-a kids meals that were being offered last month??  When I first saw that they were offering mini baking utensils I thought it was the cutest thing ever!  My kids thought it was pretty cute too and we may have even been back a few times!  Their favorite by far was when they were offering a cookie cutter and a recipe for Cinnamon Salt Dough Ornaments.  With Christmas just around the corner we didn’t waste any time cutting out our little stars so they could have some fun homemade ornaments to hang on the trees in their rooms.

Just in case you did not get the recipe and cookie cutter from Chick-fil-a I will share it with you so you can still have the fun of making these at home.  And of course any cookie cutter will work just fine!

So here is what you need to start!

In a mixing bowl add 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, and 1/2 cup cinnamon.

Mix it all together.

Gradually add in 3/4 cup lukewarm water and combine it all together with your hands and form it into a ball of dough.  Then on a lightly floured surface roll out your dough until it is about a 1/4 inch thick.

Then let the kids have at it to make their stars!

Use a straw to poke a hole in the top of each star.

Transfer the starts to wax paper and let air dry for approximately 3-4 days.  Flip daily!

We re-rolled the dough twice and that gave us about 15 stars. We still had some dough left over and the kids have been enjoying using it as play-doh.  I put it in a plastic bag zip lock bag between uses and it has still stayed fresh.  It makes a nice safe non toxic play-doh and it smells really good too!

When the ornaments were all dry I added some of my favorite red gingham ribbon in the 1/4 inch size to half of them, and the other half I used some of my red bakers twine.

Here is a few on the little tree in my bedroom!

Mayflower Boat Craft and Thanksgiving Study https://afiremanswife.com/2018/11/15/mayflower-boat-craft-and-thanksgiving-study/ https://afiremanswife.com/2018/11/15/mayflower-boat-craft-and-thanksgiving-study/#comments Fri, 16 Nov 2018 00:07:55 +0000 http://afiremanswife.com/?p=2963 Yesterday I started doing a Thanksgiving Study with my Kindergartener and Preschooler.  I thought it would be fun to change things up a little for their school time and talk about some of the history of Thanksgiving.  Will will continue this study until next Tuesday and then we will be off Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  If you are interested here is the curriculum I am using.  I did this with the girls 4 years ago and we really enjoyed it so I thought it would be fun to do it again with the boys!  A few of the things I was no longer able to print off so I just searched google for some similar activities and for my preschooler I found a few different worksheets more geared for his level.  I still had most of the needed books that I had ordered last time when doing this study.

Today we had fun making Mayflower Boats for the craft so I thought I would share what we did.  One of my girls even wanted to get in on the action!  The craft is super simple and something fun to do with younger kids even if you are not doing this unit study.

SUPPLIES:

Applesauce or mandarin orange plastic cups

popsicle sticks

washable paint

Play-Doh

white paper

scissors

glue stick

DIRECTIONS:

Paint the applesauce cups with your desired paint color.  Here is the paint I used because….WASHABLE!

I suggested brown to look like a boat, but my preschooler insisted on red.  Ya know..red is closer to the color of a fire truck so there was no talking him out of it! 🙂  I just put down some paper to protect the table and let them have at it.  If you are actually going to be putting your boats in water only paint the inside.

While our boats were drying we prepared the sails.  I just cut out trapezoids and rectangles from white paper to make the sails.

Then take your glue stick and put some glue on the top and middle of your popsicle stick.

Add your sails.

Once everything is dry you will be ready to finish assembling.

We just took some Play-Doh and put it in the bottom of the boats to hold the sail.

Then they stuck the sail in.

And there you go!  A cute little Mayflower craft to go along with learning all about the Mayflower and what it was like when the Pilgrims made their journey.

Easter Carrot Napkins https://afiremanswife.com/2018/03/06/easter-carrot-napkins/ https://afiremanswife.com/2018/03/06/easter-carrot-napkins/#comments Tue, 06 Mar 2018 08:04:27 +0000 http://afiremanswife.com/?p=2081 I love using fancy china for some holiday meals like Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve etc. and eating in the formal dining room.  It makes the day just seem a little extra special.  I love how it can cause us to slow down a little and just enjoy the moment and maybe sit and chat?!?!  For some reason Easter on the other hand I am usually all about the Target or Party City paper plates and table cloths.  With all the meal prep that can go into these special days it is nice to have a few holidays here and there with easy clean up…am I right!!

So in the spirit of fun cute little holiday decor, and Easter being on its way, I wanted to share these cute carrot napkins!  These often make their way to my paper plate style table, and will go great with any casual or pot-luck style meal.   These are an old classic, and so simple, but it’s those fun simple details that can add so much!

Here’s what you will need:

~Large size orange napkins

~ Green plastic cutlery

~Ties: raffia, ribbon, twine etc.

I usually hit up the party store when ever I need to buy colored napkins or cutlery.  This way you can find a good selection of the colors you need.

Position your napkin in a diamond shape and then place your cutlery so the fork is on top, if you are using a knife and spoon too, with them sticking up just past the top point of the orange napkin.  The fork on top with give it the look of a carrot top!  🙂

Then fold one side in:

And then continue rolling the fork and napkin the rest of the way over until you have a nice tight little bundle.  I tied mine with raffia, because I had it on hand, but any green ribbon or twine will work great too!

They are fun to put out at everyone’s place setting.  You could even tie little name tags to your ribbon if you are having assigned seats.

These are also cute to leave out in a little bundle for an adorable table decoration, or you can put them in a basket for grabbing if you are having a pot-luck style!

Then what’s even better about these is that the kids can totally help too!  You can always grab some pipe cleaners for easy wrapping with kids!

Happy Easter!

I would love if you would join my Friday link-up party!

You’ve Got Mail…. https://afiremanswife.com/2018/01/18/youve-got-mail/ https://afiremanswife.com/2018/01/18/youve-got-mail/#comments Thu, 18 Jan 2018 07:55:46 +0000 http://afiremanswife.com/?p=2019 I can’t believe it but red, pink, and hearts are already back in the stores!  Hey, if it’s all promoting “love” then that’s a good thing right!?  Anybody else see these cute little Valentine’s Day mailboxes every year??  They are always such a huge hit with my kids.

A few years back I bought them, 1. because my kids wanted them so bad, and 2. because I thought it would be fun to encourage them to leave each other cute little notes or treats.  Spreading the love right?!?!  We made a cute little craft project out of it too.  We bought a bunch of fun Valentine’s Day stickers for them to use to decorate and make their box their own, and then I wrote each of their names on the sides of the boxes with a black Sharpie.

Next to the boxes I like to leave a little stack of heart shaped paper and a pencil for them to use for their “notes”.  The littles will just scribble or leave a random toy in there but that is okay!  They all just love when they see the little “you’ve got mail” flag up on their box.  Sometimes mom or dad will leave an M & M in there too and that is always a big hit!

This is so simple and easy but something my kids look forward to every year!  I purchased the mailboxes at Target in the dollar section but I saw them at Walmart last weekend too!

I would love if you would join my Friday Link-Up Party!

Felt Pumpkins With Faces https://afiremanswife.com/2016/10/19/felt-pumpkins-with-faces/ https://afiremanswife.com/2016/10/19/felt-pumpkins-with-faces/#respond Wed, 19 Oct 2016 07:21:53 +0000 http://afiremanswife.com/?p=100 I have always loved putting out fun holiday activities and books etc. for the kids during the month of the next coming holiday.  Years ago I made these felt pumpkins for the girls when my oldest was in kindergarten and my youngest was two.  Wow how time flies!  The other day I realized that I was missing some of the black face pieces so it was time to update.  That’s what happens when boys come into the mix!  The kids love being able to mix and match the pumpkins and create their own faces.  They are perfect for that preschool and kindergarten age…..even though my 7 year old will still sit down with them every once in a while!

img_4537

This is such a simple and inexpensive little craft and the beauty of it is that it can be used year after year!  I just picked up some small pieces of felt, they are sold individually in about an 8 x 10 size, in orange, green, and black from a store like JoAnn or Michaels.  One black and one green was plenty, and the number of orange you buy will depend on how many pumpkins you want to make.  I made four pumpkins total so I just picked up two pieces of orange felt.  I was able to fit two pumpkins per sheet.  Now I am no artist by any means, but first I just drew out the template for the pumpkins and stems free hand with a pencil on a piece of paper.  That way I could erase and change my lines as many times as needed to get it just right.  Then I cut out my templates and traced around those with pen on the felt.  When cutting out the felt use really sharp scissors like sewing scissors, and I made sure to cut just on the inside of the template line so the lines did not show on my pumpkins.  For the black you can just be as creative as you want with the face pieces.
